When choosing an outboard motor, you need to know a little about the best cheap boats brands. Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors are pretty much the same, with different cosmetics. Mariner and Mercury outboards are also twin sisters. The cheap Force outboard motor was the simple Chrysler outboard of the past. Honda was the first to offer a 4 stroke engine for outboard power boats. Now every company offers a four stroke including Yamaha, Nissan, and Suzuki. Good news is no company makes a bad trolling motor. Both Minn Kota and Motorguide offer excellent quality. If you want one that will last forever, choose a model made for salt water even if you never get near the ocean. I remember my first low cost used fishing boat I bought for $75. It was a 14 foot Starcraft aluminmum deep vee and not a jon type. It had a few minor leaks around the rivets. I pulled out the interior floor and used some JB Weld to patch up the leaks. I put it all back together and all worked fine. Now I needed some power. We didn't have Craigslist back then so I hit up the garage sales and flea markets. I found a gently used 9.9 HP Johnson for $200. This was a little more than I wanted to pay, but I bought it anyway. Now all that was left was to buy life jackets and some rope. I did not have a trailer yet, but I could carry it on a pipe rack on my Chevy pickup. I always had to bring a friend with me as it was to heavy to load by myself.
When I got married and had some kids, We started looking at power pontoon boats for sale on my local Craigslist. I thought they were way over priced, so I ended up with a Glastron IO tri-hull from the 1970s. This thing was heavy! It was only a 17 foot, and my half ton pickup struggled to pull it out of the lake. It had a huge 6 cylinder Ford engine in it and got about 2 miles per gallon. When the kids are old enough to leave home, I am getting rid of the tri-hull and buying used Ranger bass boat. I plan to spend every weekend fishing rain or shine!
